A day at Freycient National park

Updated: Feb 28, 2021

We started off leaving our campsite and headed straight the wineglass bay parking area. Make sure you have a valid park pass before heading into the national park to void a fine, You can get day pass to the national park from $40. Once we parked the car we began our journey up Mt Amos This is a 3.6km hike and will take about 3 hours return (Grade 4)

This is an epic hike to do at the national park and I would highly recommend it. It is quit a difficult walk and can be very slippery when wet. A reasonable fitness level is required. The path starts off quit easy along a fine gravel path through the forest before you arrive at the bottom of the rocks from here follow the yellow arrows all the way up the mountain. There is some quit tricky parts where you are scrambling the rock surface which we discovered was quit slippery on the way down even in dry conditions. Once you reach the top you will get magnificent views of wineglass bay and hazard beach on a clear day. Make sure you check the weather before heading up so you no the skies will be clear.

I believe the other option to this hike would be Wineglass bay lookout. This hike is graded a 3 and will take about 1-1.5hours return, is 2.6km circuit. This hike is very steep and is not recommended for people with health issues or restricted mobility. Once you get to the lookout you will be rewarded with panoramic views over wineglass bay. You have another option to continue this hike to the bottom of wineglass bay which there is about 1000 steps to the beach and then from here you can walk to hazard beach which is a further 30 minute walk from wineglass bay making this extended loop to 11.5 km return circuit. We did not complete this hike I would believe its you either hike up Mt Amos or do the wineglass bay lookout.

After our hike we decided to head over to Honeymoon bay only a 2 minute drive from wineglass bay car park. Honeymoon bay Is the most popular beach at Freycient national park we do see why with the crystal clear water and only 2 minute walk from the car park. You can swim, snorkel and kayak around here. There is also picnic tables and toilets. We choose to go over to Richardson bay for a swim as it had less crowds and a beach to relax on. It is very similar to honey moon bay although I would say you may not see as much when you snorkel here. Richardson beach is 2 minutes drive from Honeymoon bay.

Sleepy bay is another spot to check out and only a short walk from the car park although I would say you wouldn't be able to swim here it is worth to check out the walk is 500 meters return and will take about 20 minutes. It is Grade 3 with steep hills and quite a few steps.

Richardson's Beach

From sleepy bay you can head straight to the Cape Tourville lighthouse It is an easy walk 600 meter round trip Grade 1. This is a perfect relaxing walk along a boardwalk with panoramic views of Freycient national park.

After Cape Tourville we ventured into Coles bay township, and Bought a ice cream from the Coles bay ice creamery. I would recommend the Ferrero Rocher and chocolate peanut butter. very tasty ice cream and very refreshing on a hot day.
